Freedom is a gift that should never be taken for granted.
We live in one of the most free countries in the entire world and we should never forget to thank God for allowing us to live here and thank those who have made incredible sacrifices to protect our freedoms. As important as national freedom is; the inner freedom that is offered to us, through Christ, is infinitely more important. When people are free in their hearts, it doesn't matter what country they live in, they can live a life that has incredible joy.
Of all the things that we typically associate with the presence of the Holy Spirit, we don't put enough value on the freedom that He brings. II Corinthians 3:17 tells us that "where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom". If the Holy Spirit is in charge of a life, a family, or a church, there will be freedom.
The longer I walk with Christ, the more it grieves me when I see people chose bondage over freedom: bondage to people pleasing, bondage to sin, bondage to man-made rules, bondage to the past, bondage to fear, and bondage to the selfish cravings of our flesh. There is no reason that the child of God needs to walk in bondage to any of these! We are called to be free!
The enemy of our hearts lies to us when he tries to convince us that freedom is found in rebellion to God (he got Eve with that lie) or in pleasing other people. (he got Adam with that lie) The truth is that freedom is found in God's presence. Once we've tasted true freedom we'll never want anything else. It's worth fighting for and worth sacrificing for. If you aren't free inside, don't settle for the lie of the enemy and his counterfeit freedoms. You'll never find freedom in religion, rule keeping, self-gratification, or sin.
Jesus said that "who the Son sets free, will be free indeed". He can, and He will set us free through the work of His Spirit. Every day, invite the Holy Spirit to take control of every area of your life and enjoy your freedom!
